HMRC Online Services

HMRC’s online service provides a variety of digital services to people who wish to manage their tax or tax credits online. It replaced the old Government Gateway system in March 2019, however you can still use your Government Gateway user ID and password to log in.

Anyone can register for an HMRC online service or set up a Personal Tax Account, but to use most of them, you’ll need to prove your identity first. To do so, you must go through a ‘secure entry portal’ provided by the Government Gateway or GOV.UK Verify, which will verify that you are who you say you are.

What can I use HMRC Online Services for?

You can use the online system to do things like:

  • Find out your tax bill
  • Make tax payments
  • Inform HMRC about a change in your circumstances

It’s also there to use if you need to do things like:

  • Submit a Self Assessment tax return
  • Register as self-employed
  • Check your personal tax account
  • Check how much PAYE taxes your employer paid
  • Submit VAT if you’re a VAT-registered sole trader, etc.

To file a tax return, you’ll need a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), which will be linked to your Government Gateway account. If you don’t already have a UTR, you can apply for one through GOV.UK.
